In the AFTERLIFE project, a flexible, cost- and resource-efficient process for recovering and upgrading relevant ingredients from wastewater is being developed. This represents an advance over existing approaches to wastewater treatment based on physico-chemical and biological methods, as the AFTERLIFE process uses a series of membrane filtration units to separate out all the solids in the wastewater from the various valuable components. These are then treated to obtain high-purity extracts and metabolites that are converted into value-added biopolymers such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs).
